Request for the ability to rename files from SDHxC

Post by futureman »

I know this is potentially a big ask.. especially with only 3 buttons.. but..

I'm using the SDHxC with an Emulator II keyboard, and it is sooooooo great! The SDHxC is an Awesome product!

Often, while using the Sampler, and making new samples I'll save them onto a floppy image. The only problem is that they are say called "Blank1" "Blank2" etc.. and after a while I'll forget which samples I saved which to for renaming etc.

I can see it being laborious, but what about a rename feature.. I understand that this can be done within a PC in a few seconds, but often while using my Emulator II i have no computer nearby.

Say if you pressed and held all three buttons for a few seconds, then this took you to a rename option, with one button moving the cursor to the right and the other two changing the character up and down.. or something to that effect.

Maybe pressing and holding all three buttons saves the name change, while say holding and pressing 2 exits with no name change..

This may not even be possible to implement, but if you could and it is not too difficult, it would be greatly appreciated!

Kind regards
Mike

Please do!

Pretty please.

I understand that for the majority of users will not use this feature, but I'm sure some people will (like me) especially those that are using Samplers and are making up new sample disks as they work.

Cheers

I use it with a sampler too, and I have the same issue. It would be pretty cumbersome to rename, but I think your idea is pretty good.

Awesome idea. I was thinking about it also some weeks ago since I'm using as well formatted images like "Empty_1.hfe", "Empty_2.hfe" for empty disks. It would be a nice feature.
Damn this hardware has so many potentials!

Jeff mate you're full of win! \o/

Howdy
I'm not trying to keep bringing this up and bug you to add it, but I had an idea I wanted to share before I forgot.

What about saving a disk image as a 'blank template', and instead of offering file rename, offer a 'create new disk from template' function, which could then be named with the cursor buttons.

Follow my workflow here:
On HxC, scroll with right button through all files.
After last file, there is a '(create blank)' entry (very similar to the '..' entry as the leftmost/first file in a folder).
Action (middle) button now changes screen to read '_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _'....or 'blank01'...doesn't matter.
Cursor is at first character, left and right scroll through alphabet, action button selects letter and advances cursor to next character.
Hold action button for 2 seconds to finalise name and generate new HFE file from template HFE file (just a direct copy, really) .

Maybe limit filenames to 8 chars or something like that, this way you could 'wrap around' to earlier characters if you made a mistake.

Just an idea, if I ever get the cajones to dig through the source I will try to do this myself, but I just wanted to get the idea out there.

And let me clarify a bit... the blank template file would be an HFE file you create from a computer, much like the 'AUTOBOOT.hfe' file. 'BLANK.hfe' would work, even. This way, I could just provide 1 blank, formatted image as the template, and I don't need to keep swapping the card out of my machine into my computer and back just to copy/paste numerous, numbered 'blank01', blank02', 'blank03'...etc files.

Of course this is just my way of thinking since I've already mildly hacked the AUTOBOOT.hfe file to my own purposes.

Thanks

Any more thoughts on this Jeff?

I guess you can see that people using the SDHxC with vintage computers may not care for this, but the vintage sampler crowd will love you for it.

Hi,

The rename function is now implemented. But before release it i need to test this carefully.
I hope to release it this WE.

Note: The file selector software must be updated!
Mh... I'm still working on the Thomson MO/TO version of it, more details please ?

Nothing change if you set the parameter_5 of the SET_LBA command to 0:

So there are a chance to have a file selector on Thomson MO/TO ? :D

Well, I'm trying :)
I have the basics working : I can read and write sectors, so I can enter LBA mode, read the firmware version, and exit firmware mode.

Now the less fun part is plugging that to a FAT handler and writing a GUI. But I have a C compiler for thomson so it should be possible to reuse some existing code...
