Hot plug & LBA Change Test Failed

Post by BlankVector »

I face an issue wth my Gotek on Amiga with current firmware/software:
Firmware: 5.2.3.1a
File selector : V2023.1.12

I don't remember ever having this problem with earlier versions.

I use an USB stick with an MBR and a single FAT16 partition. The filesystem is clean.

Preliminary steps:
- Put the USB stick into the Gotek
- Power on the Amiga
- Select slot 0 on the Gotek
- The Amiga boots onto the HxC File Selector
- I can see the files and press up/down keys to cycle
- I can move to the top line, and press up again to reload the directory

Then:

Scenario 1 : good
- Remove the USB stick
- Plug it again
Everything still works fine.

Scenario 2 : bad
- Remove the USB stick
- Put it on a PC, and do some change (add another ADF file for example)
- Plug it again into the Gotek
- Press Up to go past the top line, in order to read the directory again
- The list becomes empty, and everything is frozen
- Reboot the with Ctrl+Amiga+Amiga
- The dreadful message "LBA Change Test Failed ! Write Issue ?" is displayed, and everything is stuck.
- Rebooting again with Ctrl+Amiga+Amiga does not help: same issue
- The only way to get the Gotek working again is to power off/on.

Hotplug ability is essential to ease exchanges with other computers, just like using a floppy.
I wish this could be fixed.

I've just tested again. To my surprise, the Gotek itself actually works perfectly well!

I've just done:
- power on the Amiga
- remove the USB stick form Gotek
- plug it to Windows
- add a new ADF
- use HXCFEMNG.exe to assign that new ADF to a new slot
- eject and plug the USB stick to Gotek again
- on the Gotek, select the new slot
- reboot with Ctrl+A+A
This works as expected.

Then I select the slot 0 and reboot with Ctrl+A+A. The HxC File Selector appears, with the "LBA Change Test Failed ! Write Issue ?" message. So the issue I'm facing seems to only affect the HxC File Selector. Until next power off/on.

Note that I have a Vampire V2 accelerator in my A500+, that might have some importance. It means a very fast CPU, and also a Kickstart 3.1.

New tests:
- Same issue happens without the Vampire card (plain A500+, Kickstart 2.0)
- No need to add files from the PC. Unplug the UBS stick, wait at least 10 seconds, replug.

After additional tests, it appears that the issue happens just by removing the stick, wait 10 seconds, then plug it again. Without changing any contents.

Then @Jeff also reproduced the issue.
