"rect Access" on the HxC Rev F LCD display

Finally managed to fit my HxC RevF into my A600. While I can mount and load games there's something wrong with the LCD. When I turn on and it loads the autoboot.hfe I see "rect access", not sure that's supposed to be:

Subsequently selecting disk images the text is cut off on the left side of the LCD display.

It doesn't matter much as I use the on screen selector to mount disk images but looks like the LCD is faulty or maybe the ribbon isn't in properly? I've tried pulling it out and putting it back in again but doesn't make a difference (yes I'm pulling the plastic tab to loosen the ribbon and pushing it back in to tighten the connection).

That doesn't help. In what way have I broken it? it's not cracked. Arnie told me to remove the bastard thing but I couldn't as it seems to be glued in so I gave up. I did not force it and was very careful with it. The ribbon perhaps?
