Adapt a PS/2 Diskette Drive to a non ps/2 Controller

Post by davesradio »

I am having a difficulty adapting a IBM 1.44 mb 3.5 inch diskette drive to a non PS/2 computer. I have a breadboard setup to connect +5Vdc to Pin 3 and +12Vdc to Pin 6 and the other 32 pins connected one for one with the exception odd number pins leaving the controller and the diskette drive to set the grounds. I am also using 6 10kΩ +5Vdc pullup resistors on Pin 8 (Index), Pin 26 (Track Zero), Pin 28 (Write Protect), Pin 30 (Read Data), Pin 32 (Head 1 Select) and Pin 34 ( Diskette Change). I started the computer connect to the twist A: 34 pin cable and using the drive utility motor spins at 300 RPM Heads move to Track Zero and I have control of the stepper motor but for some reason I am not getting the MFM signal to read the drive heads. I know there maybe an issue using athe A: flat twist ribbon cable. I have ask the blogs if anyone has ever used this approach to perform head alignments or other diagnostics and on a standard computer and I have not received any solution. People ask why not use Dave Dunfield utilities and have found the PS/2 P70 with that disk software has divide overflow errors that is why I am using a standard computer to perform these tasks. There are a number of companies who make adapters to adapt a standard floppy drive to replace a PS/2 proprietary diskette drive but no one is going the other direction using a PS/2 Diskette Drive an a Standard PC Computer. Has anyone ever been successful in connecting a PS/2 Diskette Drive to a standard PC?
