Best way to connect HxC to Atari ST?

Post by gokudo »

Sorry if I'm just ignorant and missing something obvious mentioned elsewhere. What's the best or standard way to connect the HxC to an Atari (1040) ST model? First I thought, well, lets just use the existing data and power cables from the floppy drive which I won't need anymore anyway. But they're way too short. I've seen videos where some guys have those cables going out of the floppy disk slot to their HxC and was under the impression they did this with the original cables, now I think they must have desoldered the old and soldered new longer cables. At least in my Atari they are fixed on the board end, no easy replacing possible. I like to find a solution without having to solder anything because I don't have a steady enough hand and high risk of breaking something. Does anyone offer extension cables for the Atari FDD somewhere? Or am I missing another more convenient solution?

You can find extensions for the existing connections. I think this is the simplest way.
Something like that https://lotharek.pl/productdetail.php?id=75
And then you need the equivalent for supply cable.
I have that setup on a ste.

Else you can investigate to install drives switcher to boot from external unit as unit 0. But it would need hardware modification. And then you would need an st external drive case.
For ste there is an on going discussion here https://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=45080

Thanks, but I think I found a valid solution. It's for the gotek external drive but I think it should work for the HxC, too. There is a cables and adapters pack for offer which connects the gotek to the ST's external ports, both to the data port with a special cable and power via adapter from another external port. The downside is you have to have the switch you mentioned installed, but I also found someone online who did that for me.
